Years

Years before 2000 are expressed in centuries, using hundert (hundred).

Deutschland wurde neunzehnhundertneunzig (1990) wiedervereinigt.

Germany was reunified in nineteen ninety (1990).

Mozart wurde siebzehnhundertsechsundfünfzig (1756) in Salzburg geboren.

Mozart was born in Salzburg in seventeen fifty-six (1756).

From 2000 on, we speak in millennia, using tausend (thousand).

Karl Lagerfeld starb zweitausendneunzehn (2019) in Paris, aber seine Katze lebt noch.

Karl Lagerfeld died in Paris in two thousand and nineteen (2019) but his cat is still alive.

Notes:

  • To say that something happened in a given year, you do not need a preposition (like "in" in English). The phrase im Jahr(e) (in the year) is optional.

Mein Sohn ist zweitausendacht (2008) geboren.

My son was born in two thousand and eight (2008).

Die Hamburger Elbphilarmonie wurde (im Jahr/Jahre) zweitausendsiebzehn (2017) eingeweiht.

The Hamburg Elbphilarmonie opera house was inaugurated in (the year) two thousand and seventeen (2017).

  • Only years are divided into hundreds. This rule does not apply to other numbers.

Das Hotel wurde neunzehnhundert (1900) gebaut.

The hotel was built in nineteen hundred (1900).

Die Rechnung beläuft sich auf tausendneunhundert (1 900) Euro.

The bill totals one thousand nine hundred (1,900) euros.
