Endings added to comparative adjectives
Reminder: the comparative is formed by adding the ending âer to an adjective.
Ich bin kleiner als du. (klein â kleiner)
I am shorter than you.
If a comparative adjective comes before a noun, it must take an ending, just as other adjectives do. We add the following endings after the âer:
- After der, die, das, etc. we add âe or âen as specified in this table: Adjektivdeklination 1.
der schöne Garten â der schönere Garten
the beautiful garden â the more beautiful garden
die groĂe Tasche â die gröĂere Tasche
the big bag â the bigger bag
- After ein, eine etc. we add the endings shown in this table: Adjektivdeklination 2. In most cases, the endings are the same as the ending of the corresponding definite article (der, die, das, etc.).
der: ein schöner Abend â ein schönerer Abend
a beautiful evening â a more beautiful evening (masculine)
das: ein schnelles Auto â ein schnelleres Auto
a fast car â a faster car (neuter)
die: eine nette Ărztin â eine nettere Ărztin
a nice doctor â a nicer doctor (feminine)
- If there is no article, we add the ending which you would normally find at the end of the definite article (der, die, das): Adjektivdeklination 3.
die Neuigkeiten: groĂe Neuigkeiten â gröĂere Neuigkeiten
big new features â bigger new features (plural)
dem Regen: bei starkem Regen â bei stĂ€rkerem Regen
during heavy rain â during heavier rain (masculine, dative)
